In the U.S., one of the two National Guard who was shot in Washington DC has died.

President Trump announced the passing of twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom while speaking to military personnel on Thanksgiving.

Her colleague Andrew Wolfe remains in hospital fighting for his life.

More information had emerged about the suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, who drove across the country to launch an "ambush-style" attack.

Law enforcement were quickly on the scene of the incident, just blocks from the White House, Lakanwal was shot four times.

He is set to be charged and could face the death penalty if found guilty.

Lakanwal, 29, came to the US in 2021 having worked with the CIA in his home country of Afghanistan helping to guard servicemen at Kabul Airport.

The FBI confirmed his connection to US forces as they told reporters the lone gunman had "opened fire ambush style."

The motive is not clear but authorities believe the National Guard were targeted after the shooter allegedly drove across the country from Washington state.

Lakanwal was granted asylum in 2024.

Trump criticised the previous Biden administration as he ordered a review of Afghans who received a green card and "other countries of concern."

These include immigrants from Sudan, Iran and Venezuela.

Beckstrom and her colleague were among two thousand troops who have been guarding the US capital since August as part of President Trump's crackdown on crime.
